‘The gods, I was introduced to by my grandmother were vibrant, colorful and depicted in states of perpetual animation. Suddenly appeared a calm image of seated Buddha in one of the books and my fascination with the Buddha began in early childhood. Kept reading on Buddhism to find several answers to my ever increasing curiosity. Later, study of the subject – History of Art revealed the treasure of images of the Buddha and his life. Visits to various monasteries in Ladakh, Sikkim, Nepal, China, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand made me an ardent admirer of Buddhism.
Rediscovering, remembering and reading the writings of Nichiren Daishonin highlighted the Buddhaಥlevance. A lesson to look not for refuge to anyone beside yourself and watch the transformation of adversity into freedom, brokenness into wholeness, the jarring fury into flawless peace.
Painting on these themes has been a pilgrimage on the canvas – a journey inward.
